Shinewater Primary: Paws

Paws for Thought: Meet Jake, the dog helping our Shinewater pupils find their voice!
A wagging tail and a friendly face are making a big difference at Shinewater Primary School as Jake, the school’s therapy dog, brings comfort and confidence to pupils across the school community.
Shinewater Primary School places pupil voice and personal development at the heart of everything it does, ensuring every child feels heard, supported and valued. As part of this commitment, Shinewater introduced Jake, a specially trained therapy dog, to help pupils build self-esteem, communication skills and resilience. Jake was trained by Andy Pescott, the school's site manager. Andy is a fully qualified dog trainer and former member of the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers. Jake was then independently assessed by Good K9, Peter Cassidy IACP, who is also a professional dog trainer.
Since joining the school in 2024, Jake has become an important part of daily life, offering comfort, encouragement and a listening ear to pupils who need it most.
Pupils can take Jake, a Sprocker Spaniel, for walks or spend calm, reflective time with him, offering a space to relax, reassess their feelings and build confidence. Research from The University of Lincoln and The Dog Mentor shows that dogs can help to reduce anxiety, boost attendance and improve focus and engagement in lessons. This special bond has quickly become an important part of our Shinewater Primary School’s approach to emotional wellbeing and pupil development.
Jake also takes centre stage in Shinewater’s weekly celebration assemblies, where a pupil is sometimes surprised with the school’s prestigious Oscar Cup. The award recognises children who have gone above and beyond, showing kindness, resilience and a positive attitude to school life. Teachers nominate the winners, who discover their achievement during the assembly in front of proud parents who show up, to the surprise of their child, before enjoying time with Jake as part of their reward.
Jake’s presence reflects Shinewater Primary School’s wider commitment to supporting every child’s personal development. Alongside Jake, the school offers lots of other enriching opportunities such as a thriving Forest School, modern computing facilities and an outstanding sports programme, recognised with the School Games Gold Mark and supported by a dedicated sports coach.
Helen Evason, Headteacher of Shinewater Primary School, said:
“Jake has become a much-loved member of our Shinewater family. His gentle nature helps pupils to open up and find their voice; especially those who may be having a difficult time. The joy and comfort he brings has had a truly positive impact on our school.
“Beyond that, Jake has become a wonderful way for children to learn about empathy, responsibility and emotional awareness. Watching pupils’ confidence grow as they spend time with him is incredibly rewarding.”
Jackson, a Year 6 pupil at Shinewater Primary School, said:
“It’s lovely seeing Jake at school. He brings happiness when you stroke him and makes children and adults smile.”
