Summer at Meopham School

Our students and staff at Meopham School have been celebrating their strong sense of community with two special end-of-term events. Meopham school welcomed more than 140 future Year 7 students through its transition programme before bringing current students and staff together for the school’s inaugural Summer Fete.

The transition days here were designed to help students settle into secondary school life ahead of September, giving them the opportunity to meet their new teachers and classmates, explore the school and begin building new friendships.

We're excited to share that new students experienced the pace and variety of secondary school through a series of engaging lessons, including practical science experiments in dedicated laboratories. New students also spent time with their new form tutors and tutor groups, helping to ease any first-day nerves.

The programme continued with a special evening welcome event, where students discovered their new 'Houses' through a playful allocation ceremony inspired by the famous fictional “sorting hat”. As each student’s House was revealed, they were welcomed with cheers from their new teammates before joining House Teas and icebreaker activities designed to help them build friendships and feel part of the Meopham community.

Meopham School’s four Houses are each named after a historic Kent castle and linked to one of the school’s TRUE values of Tenacity, Respect, Unity and Excellence. Throughout their time at the school, students earn points for their House by demonstrating these values, taking part in enrichment activities and contributing to school life.

During these transition days, new students were able to begin putting this into practice through an energetic inter-house competition, working together on a series of community challenges. Hever House claimed the first ever Transition House Cup, while more than 80 students received individual certificates after demonstrating Meopham school’s TRUE values across the two days.

The celebrations here continued when current students and staff came together for Meopham School’s inaugural Summer Fete, marking the end of the academic year and celebrating the achievements of the school community.

The whole school spent an afternoon together, taking part in traditional village fete activities, with the school grounds transformed into a lively celebration featuring welly wanging, splat the rat, hook a duck, face painting and a bustling tombola.

Students also enjoyed a charity cake sale, a barbecue and an ice cream van, while performers took to the 'Meopham’s Got Talent' stage to showcase their skills to classmates and staff.

We're glad that every student and staff member had the opportunity to run or take part in activities, creating an inclusive event. A dedicated sensory space was also available, ensuring that any students who preferred a quieter environment could enjoy the celebrations in a way that suited them.

The fete here was organised as a reward for the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication shown by students throughout the year. Held across the school grounds in the Kent countryside, the event also made the most of Meopham school’s natural surroundings, which play an important role in supporting students’ learning and wellbeing.

“Seeing our entire school community celebrating together, embracing our values through some nostalgic village fun, was fantastic. We wanted to ensure we provided a wholesome and enjoyable opportunity for all to enjoy, within our own beautiful village grounds. This fete wasn’t just a reward for a year of academic excellence and tenacity; it was a celebration of our community in action."
