Flying Start at Shinewater

We're excited to share that our pupils and staff at Shinewater Primary School in Eastbourne are celebrating after receiving a glowing Ofsted report. Inspectors recognised our school’s inclusive culture, strong personal development offer and commitment to helping every pupil feel safe, supported and ready to succeed.

Following a full inspection on 16 June 2026, Ofsted judged Shinewater Primary School to be at a strong standard for inclusion and for personal development and wellbeing. Our school here was also found to be meeting the expected standard in achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, early years, and leadership and governance.

Inspectors described Shinewater Primary School as a place where “everyone belongs”, with pupils enjoying being part of a friendly and welcoming school. The report said our pupils arrive eager to begin the day, feel safe and know that adults care about them. It also highlighted the calm atmosphere around the school, and the kindness and respect pupils show one another. This sense of community is also recognised by families, with one parent describing Shinewater as a “hidden gem”.

Ofsted particularly praised Shinewater Primary School’s work to remove barriers to learning and that pupils’ needs are identified early and targeted support is put in place quickly. Our leaders here were recognised for having high ambitions for all pupils and being “passionate about securing the best possible outcomes for them”. Inspectors also noted that “leaders have rightly placed a strong emphasis on reading, writing, communication and language”, supported by a “broad and balanced curriculum” that prepares pupils well for the next stage of their education.  Pupils with special educational needs receive high levels of support and make good progress from their starting points, while careful tracking helps those who join Shinewater Primary School at different stages to catch up and move forward confidently.

Shinewater Primary School’s personal development and pastoral provision were also highlighted as significant strengths. Inspectors praised the meaningful experiences pupils receive, including a “mini police” initiative, gardening, outdoor learning, sport, clubs, trips and leadership opportunities.
